The Friends of Heswall Open Spaces
The Society fought to secure public ownership of the Dales and is a member of the Heswall Dales Advisory Group which monitors the management of the Dales and Beacons. We seek to preserve the Green Belt in our district; The Beacons, the Dales, Whitfield Common, the Puddydale, Dawstone Park, the open space below Tesco and the many unexpected places which give views of the Welsh Hills and the Dee estuary.
Heswall Dales are the second most important area of lowland heathland in Merseyside. The Society facilitated a £85000 grant from Natural England which funded a project to improve the area.
We were successful in preventing Tesco encroaching further into the woodland area behind the store. They revised their plans to include added tree planting both at the side and in the car park.
The society regularly arranges tree planting in the centre of Heswall, such as at the end of Thurstaston Road, the Puddydale and along Telegraph Road.
We objected to the redevelopment of the skeleton of the sports hall of the former Heswall Boys' Camp and sought its removal. This eyesore in the green belt alongside the Wirral Way was removed and there is now open space.
With a much reduced Council Budget for parks and open spaces, there is increasing need for this group to help find imaginative ways of mitigating the impact of the cuts.
Anniversary Bench
In 2013 the Society celebrated its 60th anniversary with a number of events. To mark the anniversary year the society arranged for an inscribed bench to be placed near the library and bowling green. This replaces a bench which was in poor and dangerous condition.
Flowers For Castle Buildings
When The Heswall Society heard that Wirral Borough
Council no longer intended to maintain the flower beds in front of Castle Buildings, they decided to take some action.
The Council intended to grass over the original flower beds to save money.
With permission from the Council, the Heswall Society set about planting colourful flowering plants in the flower beds in front of the Castle Buildings shops beside Telegraph Road. Old flower beds have been replanted and pansies planted on the perimeter of the rose beds.
The new planting, by Heswall Society volunteers, brightens these flower beds in the centre of Heswall. Photo of Heswall Society volunteers planting. Left to right: BRIAN COOPER, GILL COOPER, ANGIE MOUNSEY & JOHN PYKE.
