Trees
Tree outside 'Inspired Bathrooms and Kitchens', Telegraph Road
Thank you for bringing our immediate attention to the felling of the tree outside the shops on Telegraph Road. This tree had a preservation order on it and the Society should have been alerted to this work which in this case it wasn’t. The Society immediately contacted both our local Councillors and the Council Tree Preservation Officer, Erik Bowman about this. One of our Councillors (Andrew Hodson) was at the scene during the felling and was assured that the tree was diseased and had to come down for safety reasons. He also agreed with the Council and landowner that it would be replaced with two mature trees.
The Society has also received a reply from Erik Bowman which indicates that he recognised the poor state of the tree. As it was dying a five day notice would have been acceptable due to the risk of branch loss and the tree being in such a high target area. However apparently no work was given permission for this particular tree. Erik went on to say given the circumstances taking action would not be appropriate other than a reminder about the correct procedure.
The Society believes that the response from the Council’s Tree Preservation Officer raises a number of very important and serious issues with the process and will be discussing this further with him. We want to ensure that such a situation does not happen again and that we are better informed when questioned by our members and residents.
