The Local History Group of the Heswall Society
The Local History Group of the Heswall Society produces regular articles on the history of Heswall. The most recent article, plus all the back copies, can be found at the Heswall Magazine website.
As our activities become better known, we are being offered many old photographs and documents to look at. We are always appreciative to have access to such material and would encourage members to contact to contact us if they can help in this way.

In a recent edition of the Heswall and District magazine we published a history of New Hall on the Chester High Road, the history of which has not been previously well documented. In a further article we described the life of Winifred Primrose, who ran a school in Gayton Road and travelled extensively worldwide. Her school is still remembered fondly by many older Heswall residents. We have republished further articles originally written by Jessie Beattie in the 1960s, who described Heswall life a generation before Winifred.
We were contacted by a person trying to trace a childhood home Auchencary in Pipers Lane. We were able to locate the site of this demolished bungalow and even to provide an old photograph. We had a further request to find the grave of a correspondent’s grandmother in St Peter’s Church cemetery. We were successful even though the gravestone had fallen flat on its face obscuring the wording, and we hope that the requester will have the stone restored. We helped on further enquiries on St Fillan’s School and Hazeldene in Broad Lane. We continue to receive many queries like those above being sent through the Society’s website as people try to trace ancestors or to find out about the history of their houses.
